Black History is American History.

This piece started as a simple idea: What does it look like when you layer legacy? Civil rights. Literature. Music. Innovation. Politics. Culture. Each element in this illustration represents a story that helped shape the country we live in today. As a designer, I’m most inspired when storytelling and visual language intersect — when design becomes both art and archive.

Concept
The goal of this piece was to create a cohesive visual narrative that honors the intersection of civil rights, politics, literature, music, sports, and innovation. Each element was intentionally selected to reflect how these cultural milestones collectively shape the American story. The illustration emphasizes that Black history is not separate from American identity — it is foundational to it.

Design Approach
The composition is anchored around a historic civil rights bus to ground the narrative in movement and legacy. Symbolic artifacts were layered throughout the scene to represent cross-generational impact, balancing contemporary and historic references within a single frame. Saturated cultural elements were unified through a consistent color grade and subtle texture to create cohesion, while maintaining clarity and hierarchy. The piece was designed with scalability in mind, ensuring it could translate seamlessly across social, print, and campaign applications.
